LUCEA, Hanover - One thousand students from across the island will this summer benefit from a programme organised by the tourism ministry.
“We are going to have a ‘Youth in Tourism’ programme that is going to drive not only employment possibilities for the youths, but will build work ethics and will give them a strong sense of their own responsibility as citizens to the communities that they are involved in and to the tourism that is so important to Jamaica,” Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett said.
According Bartlett, during the six-week programme the students will be engaged in aspects of the tourism sector, such as tour guide and courtesy corps activities.
“They will work in part in various attractions and small hotel properties so that they begin to feel a sense of what the industry is, and how it is impacting them and their lives,” the minister said.
The students, he added, will be drawn from high schools, colleges and universities islandwide.
He said on the completion of the programme, his ministry will undertake a work-study initiative at schools throughout the resort areas of Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios.
“Port Antonio, the Kingston area and the South Coast will come on board afterwards,” Bartlett said.
